The Publishing industry is going through an unprecedented shift. Around the world they have become disconnected from their brick and mortar book retailers, as well as from consumers, with the dominance of Apple and Amazon who have taken control of publishing and the distribution of ebooks. On average these online retailers take 30% of all ebook revenues, vastly reducing both the publisher and authors’ profits from the ebook while also impacting the revenue model of conventional books. The recent bankruptcy of “Borders” illustrates the dramatic shift that has taken place in this market segment.
Publishers have to evolve their business models quickly in order to compete. One way they are doing this is by leveraging Mo-DV technology, which enables them to deliver protected content via removable media with a universal player so customers can read the books through multiple devices.
By producing ebooks on memory cards or USB flash drives, publishers are able to reconnect with retailers and consumers through a direct path. An enhanced ebook on memory card will not only provide text for reading, it will include Internet references, videos, still pictures, text to speech for listening, interactive white boards for classrooms, annotation and highlighting tools with note taking , highlighting, and a Rapid Reader function for reading on cell phones and other mobile devices. Rapid Reader enlarges each word to large size on the screen and permits high reading rates – 1500 words/minute as a type of subliminal movie.
